Roy Lewis, Jr. is a cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks. He was first signed by the Pittsburg Steelers in 2008 and since 2009 played for the Seattle Seahawks.
During his college career, Lewis was named a team captain as a senior at University of Washington. Initially enrolled at San Jose State, Lewis transferred to University of Washington following his freshman year. Eventually he earned a major in American ethnic studies. He was named Pac-10 defensive player of the week and the team's defensive MVP after the win over Boise State in 2007. Lewis, who played linebacker and cornerback in high school and college, impressed Steelers coach Mike Tomlin with his physical play, leading the coaching staff to give him an opportunity at the safety position.
Lewis earned a Super Bowl ring with the Pittsburgh Steelers in February 2009 and later that year was signed by the Seattle Seahawks. He was the special teams captain for 2010.
He was selected as Seahawks’ Man of Year for 2010. The award is presented annually to the player who goes above and beyond in his charitable and humanitarian work in the community.
On January 2, 2011, Roy Lewis was presented with the Steve Largent Award, which is voted on annually by the players and given to the player who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks. The Largent Award is named after Hall of Fame wide receiver Steve Largent, the first winner of the honor in 1989.
Lewis' emphasis for his community involvement is children.
“I’ve just got a soft spot for kids,” Lewis said. “I do the things in the community because when I was younger I didn’t have the opportunity to experience it. There’s just something about kids – just the innocence of them. You can be so much of an influence to a young person, and you never know how much of an impact that can make on their lives and the decisions they make.
“So I appreciate the opportunity. I feel privileged when I go out there and talk to the young kids. I have the opportunity to give back, so why wouldn’t I give back?”
Lewis has been giving since his days at University of Washington. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi. “Ever since then, I’ve just been on a roll,” Lewis said. “Giving back, some people go out there and some people don’t. For me, it’s just a way to feel like I’m having a positive impact and using the NFL as a vehicle to touch other people’s lives.”
Outside of the NFL, Roy Lewis says,
“It’s all about the kids.”
